Intrepid Travel launches second press trip for aspiring travel writers
We're recruiting aspiring travel writers from underrepresented backgrounds
After the success of last year’s Diversifying Travel Media Press Trip to Croatia with Intrepid, in which four aspiring writers were given mentoring by four professionals on the Dalmatian Coast, we’re delighted to announce the next trip — this time to Portugal. Read on for the full information.
Are you a budding travel writer keen to experience your first press trip? This October, Intrepid Travel will be hosting its second Diversifying the Travel Media Press Trip to support aspiring travel writers from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
The trip will be made up of four established travel writers and editors and four emerging writers at the beginning of their career.
We know one of the barriers to securing commissions for new travel writers is press trip experience — without the trip, you have nothing to pitch, and with nothing to pitch, you can’t get your first bylines — and so this initiative aims to address this. As well as exploring Portugal’s beautiful Coa Valley, the trip will include a range of workshops designed to help writers navigate the travel media landscape and learn how to turn press trip experiences into commission-worthy pitches.
One mentee from last year’s trip said, “Applying for the trip was the best decision I've ever made, equipping me with the skills and confidence to pursue travel journalism full-time. The ongoing support and expertise from Intrepid, our mentors and fellow attendees has been incredible; I have made friends for life and taken leaps I didn't think were possible so early into my career."
Attendees will have the option to travel to the start of the press trip in Porto flight-free thanks to a partnership with Eurail. Eurail encourages slow and conscious travel by giving travellers the opportunity to experience flexible, borderless train travel across Europe. The trip is accessible, so applicants with accessibility needs are welcome to apply.
After the trip, mentees will be invited to a pitch session with Adventure.com’s senior editor Meera Dattani to explore and work out story angles with a view to sending a fully crafted pitch to the editorial team for a potential commission. You can read the stories written by the four mentees from the inaugural Croatia trip on Adventure.com now, here.
We are looking for four emerging writers from underrepresented or diverse backgrounds to join the trip. Applications close May 28 and successful applicants will be selected by a panel made up of the trip’s experienced travel writers.
Fabulous stuff!
