We’ve all heard about these $1-per-word publications, but how many of us have actually earned such lofty fees? Here we find out from Zanny Steffgen how she got a dollar-per-word assignment from Nat Geo (US).


I’ve been writing about my travels since 2014, taking on SEO copywriting gigs since 2018, and writing full-time since 2021. These days, my main focus is freelance travel journalism, but I also do some SEO copywriting for tour companies and DMOs on the side. Counting both travel journalism and copywriting for tourism businesses, 98% of my income comes from travel writing. The rest comes from teaching Italian.
