The very best travel writing freelancers are those who maximise their time and money, and the best way of doing that — usually — is by getting multiple commissions for that five-day tour of Georgia you’ve been invited on. With rates so low, getting paid £150 for a week of travelling plus a day or two of writing just isn’t viable unless this is your hobby (no shade there, we all need a hobby).
But landing just one commission — the one that gets you on that press trip — is hard enough. Landing three or four can feel like the impossible. But it’s doable. Once upon a time, in the good old days of pre-pandemic 2020, I was going on a trip to Dubai. The World Expo was planned for later in the year, and so I was covering it for The Telegraph — a “what to expect from Expo” sort of piece.
