Exclusive: how to pitch Discover Britain & Scotland magazines
Sally Coffey tells all on what she wants from freelancers for her two bi-monthly mags
Last month, the lovely Sally Coffey lent us an hour of her time so we could grill her on her position as editor at Discover Britain mag and Scotland magazine. She looks after both bi-monthly mags, which are owned by Chelsea Magazines, and occasionally commissions supplements too. Here’s what you need to know if you’ve got ideas for them…
Who is your audience?
The audience is largely based in America, Canada, and Australia. A lot of our readers are of the Scottish diaspora — people who emigrated many years ago and their descendants — or perhaps are just anglophiles, so they love all things British. They probably have quite a traditional view of Britain, but we are hoping to show our audience some of the quirkier, unusual aspects, and show them who we really are behind the rose-tinted view they might hold. The magazines are very much a celebration of Britain but with an insider’s view.
Where is it sold?
We have a very large subscription base, but it’s also on the newsstands at Barnes & Noble and WH Smith.
