Some unforeseen circumstances are keeping us quiet for a month

Hello wonderful subscribers.

This is just a little note to say we’re going to be quiet for a while.

We had big plans for June’s newsletters, but unfortunately some unforeseen circumstances (a family emergency plus a bout of Covid for Lottie and some ropey wifi in the jungle for Steph) mean we aren’t able to fulfil our weekly newsletter duties. For paid subscribers, your payments will be paused until we’re back up and running in July; you don’t need to do anything.

Speaking of July, next month we’ve got cracking series on travel writer finances from freelance travel writer and editor Qin Xie, who also happens to be an oracle on personal finance and writes the brilliant Money Talk newsletter on Substack.

She’ll be covering everything from how many stories you need to write to make a press trip financially worthwhile to money saving tips and essential knowledge for freelance travel writers. She’ll also talk about the Big Thing none of us really understand: tax deductible expenses. Here’s what’s coming up in July:

  • July 5: How do you make press trips pay?

  • July 12: How do you keep costs down on the road?

  • July 19: Can you really negotiate rates?

  • July 26: Tax and other things you probably don't want to think about but should

We’re excited to be back in your inboxes for July, but in the meantime, here’s a round up of recent posts you might find useful (the 💰 indicates a paywall while the ✅ means it’s free to read), plus some news you can use from Twitter…

  • 💰 How to pitch Discover Britain & Scotland mag: editor Sally Coffey gives us the lowdown on what she commissions.

  • 💰 How to pitch ABTA Magazine: we spoke to editor Florence Derrick about what she wants from freelancers. We’d also like to apologise to Florence, whose name we forgot to put in the original newsletter when this piece went out! That’s what happens when you’re trying to schedule newsletters from the Colombian jungle, apparently.

  • 💰 Strategy is not a dirty word: Lottie delves into ways you can be more strategic with your travel writing career.

  • 💰 How to pitch Travel Weekly: new editor Clare Vooght explains how it works at her weekly B2B magazine.

  • ✅ Career growth as a freelance travel writer: with hot tips from Sian Meades-Williams.

  • ✅ An A-Z of pitching guidelines: exactly what it says on the tin.

  • 💰 How to pitch loveEXPLORING: editor Abra Dunsby-Sircana talks us through her content strategy and what she wants from you.

  • 💰 How this female travel writer earns £30k a year: a money diary from a fellow freelancer.
